Thrift Shopping and the Story Behind Clothes

Thrift shopping has become trendy, but it can be more than an aesthetic. When students buy secondhand clothes, they are also questioning the idea that every event needs a brand-new outfit.

I like thrift stores because they make clothes feel less disposable. A jacket might have belonged to someone with a totally different life. A shirt might be older than the person wearing it now. That makes fashion feel more creative and less like copying whatever the algorithm says is popular.

Still, thrift shopping is not a perfect solution. In some places, popular thrift culture can raise prices for people who depend on secondhand stores. Also, buying too many used clothes is still overconsumption.

The best version of thrifting is thoughtful. Buy what you will wear, repair what you can, and donate carefully.

Clothes do not have to be new to feel personal. Sometimes they become more interesting because they already had a life before us.
